Topsail Island Red Drum Fishing: Mastering the Fall Run
As September arrives in Topsail Island, the air gets crisp, the mullet begin their migration, and the “Old Drum” (large adult Red Drum) return to our waters in massive numbers. This is, without question, the most exciting time of year for inshore and surf anglers in North Carolina. Whether you’re targeting “puppy drum” in the creeks or giant “bull drum” in the inlets, preparation is key.
Where to Find Fall Red Drum
The fall migration brings Red Drum through a variety of Topsail habitats. Success depends on knowing where they are schooling:
- The Surf Zone: During September, large drum patrol the sloughs and sandbars just off the beach, especially near the inlets. Surf fishing is highly productive now.
- New River & Topsail Inlets: These deep, high-flow channels are staging grounds for spawning “bull drum.” Fishing the drop-offs on an outgoing tide is legendary.
- ICW Docks and Oyster Bars: Smaller “puppy drum” (under 27 inches) congregate around structure in the Intracoastal Waterway and marsh creeks, feeding heavily on the mullet run.
Proven Drum Rigs and Bait
Fall drum are feeding aggressively, but your presentation must be right. Use heavy-duty gear for the big boys:
-
- The “Drum Rig” (Fish Finder Rig): For surf and inlet fishing, use a sliding sinker sleeve, a short (6-10 inch) 80lb mono leader, and a large (8/0-10/0) circle hook. This is essential for safely releasing large fish.
- Cut Bait: Fresh-cut mullet is the gold standard for fall drum. Large chunks are best for attracting spawning adults in the inlets. Fresh menhaden or bluefish also work well.
- Artificials: For puppy drum in the marsh, use 4-5 inch paddle tail swimmbaits on a 1/4 to 1/2 oz jig head, mimicking the migrating mullet.

Practice Ethical Fishing
Many of the Red Drum caught in September are large, spawning adults (over 40 inches). These fish are crucial for the population. Always use circle hooks to prevent deep hooking, minimize fight time to prevent exhaustion, and handle large fish gently. Keep them in the water as much as possible for photos and release them quickly.
Book a Drum Expert
Targeting large “bull drum” often requires specialized heavy tackle and knowledge of tricky inlet currents or surf conditions. Hiring a local guide ensures you are equipped for success and operating safely.
