Surf City NC Fishing: Pier, Surf & Soundside Reports

Surf City NC fishing is the pulse of Topsail Island, offering a perfect mix of oceanfront and sound-side action. As the central hub of the island, Surf City provides easy access to the deep Atlantic and the fertile marshes of the ICW. Whether you are walking the planks of the local pier or casting into the suds, Surf City NC fishing delivers year-round results for every angler.

Top Spots in Surf City

The variety of water in Surf City is unmatched. The Surf City Ocean Pier is a landmark for king mackerel and bluefish. If you prefer the sound side, Soundside Park and Kenneth Batts Park offer great access for shore-based anglers and kayakers. The “S-turns” and the beach near the Roland Avenue access are also famous for productive surf fishing during the fall drum runs.

What’s Biting: Species & Tactics

  • Spanish Mackerel & Bluefish: These fast-movers are common sights on the pier. Use “Got-Cha” plugs or small metal jigs with a fast retrieve to trigger strikes.
  • Red Drum & Black Drum: Focus on the ICW docks and the marsh lines near the Surf City bridge. Fresh shrimp or cut mullet on a simple bottom rig works best here.
  • Sea Mullet (Whiting): Surf anglers can find consistent success using two-hook bottom rigs tipped with shrimp or bloodworms in the breakers.

Public Access and Pier Rules

Access is convenient via the many public crossovers along South Shore Drive. For boaters, the Soundside Park boat ramp provides a direct route into the ICW. Note that as of 2026, the Surf City Ocean Pier offers all-night fishing access exclusively for season pass holders. Day pass holders can fish until dark. Always carry your NC Coastal Recreational Fishing License (CRFL) when fishing from the beach or sound-side parks.

2026 Mandatory Harvest Reporting

North Carolina state law now requires recreational anglers to report the harvest of specific species. If you keep Red Drum, Flounder, or Speckled Trout in Surf City, you must submit a report. Use the NC DMF Harvest Reporting Portal immediately after your trip to stay compliant with 2026 regulations.
