Early Morning Inshore Bite
Captain Mike reports that the early morning bite has been great across the Topsail area. However, once the sun climbs higher, the action begins to slow down. Therefore, anglers fishing Hampstead, the Intracoastal Waterway, New River, North Topsail Beach, Sneads Ferry, Surf City, Topsail Beach, and Topsail Sound should plan to get on the water early.
Big Trout and Red Drum on the Flats
Speckled trout and red drum have been schooling around large schools of pogeys on the flats. As a result, sight-casting opportunities have been strong when anglers can locate active bait. In addition, black drum remain part of the inshore mix, giving anglers another quality target during summer trips.
Live Bait, Popping Corks, and Topwater Action
Most days, Captain Mike has been using popping corks with live bait to stay on the bite. Meanwhile, the topwater bite has also been good, especially during the lower-light morning window. These techniques are producing exciting strikes from trout and reds in shallow water.

The hot summer days are here and the early morning bite has been great but dies off as the sun gets high Lots of big trout and reds are schooling on large schools of pogeys if the flats. I’ve been using popping corks with live bait most days but the top water bite has been good as well. Remember to take your kids fishing while on vacation in Topsail island this summer!
