North Topsail Beach Fishing: Surf, Inlet & Bridge Reports

North Topsail Beach fishing offers some of the most diverse salt-water action on the coast. From the deep waters of the New River Inlet to the productive surf zones along the northern tip of the island, anglers find plenty of targets. Whether you are a surf caster or a boat owner, North Topsail Beach fishing provides year-round excitement for every skill level.

Top Spots at North Topsail

This end of the island is famous for its unique structure. The North Topsail High-Rise Bridge pilings are a magnet for sheepshead and black drum. Many anglers also flock to the New River Inlet, where the rushing tides move baitfish and predators constantly. If you prefer the sand, the deep sloughs near the Permit Hill area are excellent for targeting sea mullet and red drum right from the beach.

What’s Biting: Species & Tactics

  • Red Drum & Black Drum: Use fresh shrimp or cut mullet around the bridge fenders and oyster rocks. The current here is strong, so use enough weight to keep your bait on the bottom.
  • Spanish Mackerel & Bluefish: During the summer, these fast-moving fish often feed in the breakers and near the inlet mouth. Casting small metal jigs or “Got-Cha” plugs is highly effective.
  • Sea Mullet (Whiting): Use a two-hook bottom rig with small pieces of shrimp or bloodworms in the surf. Focus on the deeper “holes” between the sandbars.

Public Access & Boat Ramps

There are several ways to get on the water here. The Shrimp Lady Lane boat ramp under the high-rise bridge offers a convenient launch for the ICW and the river. For surf anglers, North Topsail Beach provides numerous public access points with parking. Always check the local tide charts, as the New River Inlet can be treacherous for small boats during an outgoing tide and an onshore wind.

2026 Mandatory Harvest Reporting

If you keep any fish at North Topsail Beach, stay compliant with the latest 2026 state laws. You must report your harvest of Red Drum, Flounder, and Speckled Trout. Use the NC DMF Harvest Reporting Portal to record your catch. This helps protect our local North Carolina fisheries for future generations.
