Topsail ICW Fishing: Intracoastal Waterway Reports & Access

Topsail ICW fishing offers some of the most consistent action in North Carolina. The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) serves as a massive highway for baitfish and predators alike. Whether you are fishing from a private dock or navigating the channel in a skiff, the Topsail ICW fishing scene provides year-round opportunities for anglers of all skill levels.

Top Spots on the Topsail Intracoastal

The ICW is famous for its structure. Focus your efforts on bridge pilings, docks, and creek mouths where the current is strongest. The fender systems of the Surf City and North Topsail bridges are legendary hotspots. Many anglers also find success fishing the “ledge” where the shallow flats drop off into the deep dredged channel of the waterway.

Target Species and Tactics

  • Red Drum & Flounder: These fish love the shade and structure provided by ICW docks. Use a Carolina rig with live mud minnows or finger mullet. Cast as close to the pilings as possible.
  • Black Drum & Sheepshead: Look for older docks with heavy barnacle growth. Fresh shrimp or fiddler crabs dropped vertically against the structure will yield the best results.
  • Speckled Trout: During the fall and winter, trout move into the ICW feeder creeks. Use popping corks or slow-sinking twitchbaits along the current seams.

Public Boat Ramps and Access

Accessing the waterway is easy via several public ramps in the Topsail area. Popular launch points include Soundside Park in Surf City and the Shrimp Lady Lane ramp under the North Topsail bridge. If you are on the south end, the Bush Marina in Topsail Beach offers excellent access to the ICW near the inlet. Always be mindful of the “No Wake” zones and heavy boat traffic during the summer months.

2026 Mandatory Harvest Reporting

If you harvest fish while fishing the ICW, remember that North Carolina law now requires reporting for specific species. This includes Red Drum, Flounder, and Speckled Trout. You must report your catch through the NC DMF Harvest Reporting Portal once your trip is complete.
