Flounder Fishing at Topsail Island: Reports, Tips & Regulations

Topsail Island offers some of the finest flounder fishing in North Carolina, whether you are stalking the sound-side marshes or fishing the nearshore artificial reefs. Known for their incredible camouflage and aggressive strikes, “flatfish” are a favorite target for local anglers and visitors alike.

Where to Find Them

In the Topsail area, flounder thrive in a variety of environments. Look for them around New River Inlet, the ICW docks, and the deep holes in Stump Sound. As the water temperatures shift, many of the larger “door mats” move toward the nearshore wrecks and ledges just off the beach.

Top Tactics & Bait

  • Live Bait: A Carolina Rig with a live finger mullet or mud minnow is the gold standard for Topsail flounder.
  • Artificials: Bouncing a Gulp! Shrimp or a bucktail jig tipped with a trailer along the bottom is highly effective for covering ground.
  • Structure is Key: Flounder are ambush predators. Focus your efforts on current seams, creek mouths, and the down-current side of bridge pilings and docks.
