Spring Warming: Captain Mike Hoffman March 9 2026 Report
The transition into spring is officially in high gear along the North Carolina coast. According to the Captain Mike Hoffman March 9 2026 fishing report, rising temperatures are heating up the inshore action significantly. We are seeing a major push of fish into shallower waters as the sun warms the dark bottom of our local flats. Conditions this week are nearly perfect for anglers who enjoy visual, high-engagement fishing.
Flats Fever: Black Drum and Redfish Movement
The primary story in the Captain Mike Hoffman March 9 2026 update is the movement of key species. “The weather is warming up and the fishing is getting hot,” Mike reports. Large numbers of Black Drum and Redfish (Red Drum) are moving up into the shallow flats near North Topsail Beach and Surf City. These fish are looking for easy meals in the warming water. Captain Mike notes that he has been seeing more and more fish with each passing day this week.
The Sight Fishing Game
Clear, calm water has turned the estuary into a window. The Captain Mike Hoffman March 9 2026 report highlights that sight-casting is currently the best way to target these schools. When the water is this clear, you can watch the schools as they feed along the bottom. It is a thrilling way to fish that requires a stealthy approach and a sharp eye. For bait, Captain Mike’s top choice right now is fresh shrimp. This natural offering is hard for hungry Drum to pass up as they patrol the flats.
Plan Your Mid-March Trip
With sunny skies and calm winds, the current window for inshore fishing is wide open. Whether you are a seasoned pro or a family looking for a fun day out, the Captain Mike Hoffman March 9 2026 trends suggest that now is the time to book. The fish are active, the water is clear, and the schools are visible. This combination of factors makes it a perfect time to experience the best of Topsail’s inshore habitat.

Shrimp is what I’ve been using for bait . Sight fishing is the game water is clear and a perfect time to see the schools of fishing feeding.
