Red Grouper Fishing at Topsail Island: Reports, Tips & Regulations

Topsail Red Grouper are a top target for offshore anglers heading into the Atlantic. These hard-pulling bottom fish provide excellent table fare and a true test of tackle. Whether you are fishing the deep ledges or the “live bottom” areas out of New River Inlet, a Topsail Red Grouper is the highlight of any offshore trip.

Where to Find Them

Red Grouper prefer flat, rocky bottoms and ledges in deeper water. In our area, focus on live bottom reefs and hard-bottom ledges in depths ranging from 80 to 120 feet. Unlike Gag Grouper, which love high-profile wrecks, Red Grouper often roam the surrounding flatter, rocky terrain looking for prey.

Top Tactics & Bait

  • The Right Bait: Use large squid, cigar minnows, or cut oily fish like mackerel. Live pinfish are also highly effective for tempting larger “fire truck” reds out of the rocks.
  • Bottom Fishing Gear: Use heavy conventional tackle with a 60-80 lb fluorocarbon leader. A fish-finder rig or a standard two-hook bottom rig works well to keep your bait in the strike zone.
  • The Fight: Red Grouper will immediately dive for the nearest hole when hooked. Keep your drag tight and try to get the fish’s head up quickly to avoid being “rocked” in the structure.

2026 Red Grouper Regulations

Offshore regulations change frequently to protect spawning populations. For 2026, the South Atlantic seasons and limits are strictly enforced. Please check the official links below before your offshore run:

  • SAFMC Regulations: View the latest South Atlantic Fishery Management Council limits for Red Grouper.
  • NCDMF Offshore Limits: Check the NC Coastal Size and Bag Limits for federal water species.
  • Seasonal Closures: Remember that Red Grouper are typically part of the shallow-water grouper spawning closure from January through April. Always verify the current opening date.
