Saturday at Topsail.Fish

Speckled trout underwater for the Saturday at Topsail.Fish Know Your Catch series

Know Your Catch: Speckled Trout

Fall is arriving around Topsail, and speckled trout are moving higher on the priority list for inshore anglers. But despite the name, a speckled trout isn’t actually a trout. Its official name is spotted seatrout, and it’s a member of the drum family.

As local waters cool, shrimp, finger mullet and other forage can concentrate around creek mouths, oyster structure, marsh edges and moving water. Understanding the fish, the bait and the conditions can make you a better angler.

This Saturday we’re taking a closer look at speckled trout — and we’ve also given one of our earlier Topsail.Fish articles a major Fall 2026 update.

Something Different Every Saturday

Saturday at Topsail.Fish is our weekend look at the fishing knowledge, people and experiences that make the Topsail area such a special place to fish.

Some Saturdays we’ll share a practical fishing tip. Other weeks we’ll explore a local species, help introduce kids to fishing, dig into tides and fishing conditions, hear from local captains, or bring a useful article back from the Topsail.Fish library.

The subject changes. The purpose doesn’t: help anglers learn more, enjoy more time on the water and strengthen our local fishing community.
