Spring Stability Returns: The Redfish are Schooling Up

The spring weather on the North Carolina coast has been a bit of a roller coaster lately, but things are finally looking up for local anglers. According to the latest Topsail Island Fishing Report for: May 15, 2026, Captain Mike Hoffman reports that the region is finally moving out of a cycle of disruptive cold fronts. After a period of fluctuating temperatures and shifting winds, we are entering a week of stable weather, which is precisely what the inshore fishery needs to hit its stride. With sunny skies and clear water, the conditions in Hampstead, Sneads Ferry, and the Topsail Sound are becoming prime for technical angling and sight-casting.

Redfish Regrouping in the Sound

The primary focus of this week’s report is the behavior of the Red Drum schools. Recent cold fronts had caused the fish to scatter, making them difficult to track consistently. However, as the barometer stabilizes and the water temperature steadies, the fish are beginning to group back together. Captain Mike reports that as of today, the Redfish are “schooled up pretty good” throughout the Intracoastal and backwater marshes. This grouping behavior is excellent news for those booking Topsail fishing charters, as it significantly increases the chances of multiple hookups once a school is located.

Sight-Casting and Effective Bait Tactics | May 15 Topsail Fishing Report

With the return of clear water and only a light chop on the surface, sight-casting has become the go-to technique for the week. Captain Mike has found great success using mullet over the last several days to entice these hungry Reds. Before the last front moved through, soft plastics were also high producers. As the water warms back up tomorrow, Mike plans to reintroduce soft plastics into the rotation to see if the aggressive spring bite has fully returned. The combination of live bait and artificial lures ensures that no matter the mood of the fish, there is a way to get them to commit.

The Perfect Week for an Inshore Adventure | May 15 Topsail Fishing Report

The report concludes with a very optimistic outlook for the days ahead. The upcoming stretch of stable, warm weather typically translates directly into great fishing. Whether you are navigating the shallow flats of Surf City or the winding marshes of Topsail Beach, the environment is perfect for a productive and comfortable day on the water. As the summer season approaches, now is the time to get out and enjoy the coastal beauty. As Captain Mike always says: while you’re on vacation, remember to take your kids fishing!

Well here we go with another cold front. This week is looking good though, finally a week with stable weather. The redfish schools have been scattered because of the cold fronts but today they were schooled up pretty good. I’ve been fishing mullet the last few days and it’s working well. Soft plastics were working well to before the front so I’ll try throwing them again tomorrow . Great weather on the way means great fishing !
