Captain Mike Hoffman May 4 2026 Fishing Report
The Captain Mike Hoffman May 4 2026 fishing report highlights the start of strong early summer patterns along Topsail Island. With clear water, a warm front, and an outgoing tide, inshore fishing conditions are lining up well. Most importantly, the best action is happening early in the morning.
Early Morning Bite Is Best
According to Captain Mike Hoffman, anglers are finding the strongest bite at first light. Areas such as Hampstead, North Topsail Beach, Sneads Ferry, Surf City, Topsail Beach, and Topsail Sound are all producing action. However, once the sun gets higher, the bite begins to slow. Therefore, anglers should plan to get on the water early.
Red Drum and Big Bluefish
Red drum are the main target in this Captain Mike Hoffman May 4 2026 report. In particular, plenty of over-slot reds are being caught near the inlets. In addition, some of those larger fish are moving onto the flats and mixing with native slot-sized reds. As a result, anglers have a good chance at a strong mixed-bag day.
Large chunks of mullet have been working well near the inlet areas. Meanwhile, monster bluefish in the 12-pound-plus range are also showing up and providing hard fights. These aggressive fish are a welcome bonus for anglers targeting red drum.
Soft Plastics on the Flats
On the flats, soft plastics have been the most productive choice for Captain Mike. Because the water is clear, anglers should work these baits carefully through shallow areas where red drum are cruising. Also, keeping a few different soft plastic colors ready can help when fish become selective.
Take the Kids Fishing
Finally, Captain Mike reminds visitors that May is a great time to take kids fishing along the Topsail coast. The weather is warming, the fish are active, and early trips can create lasting family memories.

Original Submission – Captain Mike Hoffman May 4 2026 Fishing Report
It’s May and the summer patterns are starting to. The early morning bite is strong and gets weak as the sun gets high . Lots of over slot reds near the inlets along with some monster blue fishing 12+lbs . Most coming on large chunks of mullet. Up on the flats some of those over slots are mixing with the native fish so there is a good mixed bag. Soft plastics are doing the best for me. Remember while on vacation to the coast to take your kids fishing !
