The Parsons’ Perspective…. Winter Inshore Scouting

In this strategic edition of The Parsons’ Perspective, Captain Lee Parsons explains why winter inshore scouting is the secret weapon of elite anglers. While many people stay off the water during the colder months, Lee uses this time to map out the movements of trophy fish. The water is often at its clearest in the winter, providing a “window” into the underwater world that disappears once the spring algae blooms arrive. By scouting now, you are building a blueprint for success that will last all year long.

January Drums and Bank Cruising

One of the most exciting revelations in this video is that January is a prime time for big redfish. Lee notes that even in the dead of winter, the big drums are cruising the banks. These fish are often looking for the slightest bit of warmth or easy forage along the shallow edges. Lee emphasizes that high tide is good for this type of scouting because it allows you to see how the fish transition from the deeper channels onto the flat shelves. Spotting these cruising patterns now tells you exactly where to set up when the bite turns on.

The Low Tide Dock Strategy

Docks are legendary winter habitats, but Lee has a very specific set of criteria for finding the “hot” ones. He explains that dock fishing is good when you find a specific depth profile. Look for docks that have about 3 feet of water on a low tide but are located right next to a good drop off. This depth is critical because it allows the bottom to warm up quickly in the sun. The fish will move out of the deep, cold holes and stack up in the 3-foot shallows just to sun themselves and elevate their body temperature.

Building Your Mental Map

Winter scouting isn’t just about catching; it’s about observing undisturbed structure. Because there is less boat traffic and the water is clear, you can see the oyster rocks and submerged logs that fish call home. Lee suggests taking note of these locations while the fish are visible and lethargic. When the seasons change and the water gets murky, you will have the confidence to cast into the dark, knowing exactly what lies beneath. Use the winter months to master the terrain, and the rewards will show up in your cooler all spring and summer.
