July 2025 Fishing Report Summary
As summer heats up in Coastal North Carolina, Topsail Island's fishing scene is thriving. A summary of recent reports from local captains highlights consistent success, with a focus on active inshore bites and plenty of opportunities for anglers. Despite the typical midday summer heat and some rain, the fishing remains strong for those who know where and how to look.
Inshore Action is in Full Throttle
Inshore waters have been particularly productive this month, with an abundance of baitfish attracting predatory species. Captains report that the topwater bite has been "amazing" during the first few hours of the morning before the sun gets too high. Once the day warms up, the strategy shifts to using live bait on popping corks, with live mullet proving to be a particularly effective choice for hungry fish.
The visual excitement of flats fishing is also a major highlight. Redfish, trout, and flounder are actively moving into the shallows to feed on shrimp and finger mullet. Anglers are enjoying the thrill of sight fishing, spotting tailing redfish in just four to six inches of water, a prime opportunity for both new and experienced fishermen.
Flounder and Redfish on the Menu
Flounder fishing around Topsail Island is described as being in "full throttle," with many big fish moving up onto oyster beds to feed. Captains recommend using both live bait and artificial baits for success. A key tip for live bait fishing is to use a 12-14 inch, 50-pound leader and to clip the tail off the mullet to prevent tangling on the oyster beds. On the artificial side, Gulp shrimp on a 3/16 blue water candy jig head or a white 4-inch Gulp swimming grub have been producing great bites.
While the bite can slow down around 9-10 AM on hot days, those who persist through a little rain have been rewarded. One report noted that the bite picked up right after the rain started, proving that a little wet weather doesn't necessarily mean a bad day on the water.
A Great Time for Anglers of All Kinds
The reports confirm that Topsail Island's inshore fishing charters are suitable for everyone, from first-timers to the most skilled anglers. Charters are kid and family-friendly, and captains are ready to help clients with a variety of techniques, from topwater to float fishing.
